I just replaced the alt. belt on my '77 a-4. I did not take the alternator off, merely loosened the two bolts that hold it on. It pivots down on the adjustment bracket and the old belt slips off. I did take the distributor cap off to give the belt more room to slip out and make it easier to see the drive pulley.
