Joe,

Check and make sure that the choke is dis-engaging completely. You do this by removing the flame arrestor attached to the carburetor and making sure that the choke plate is completely horizontal when it's shut off.

Also, check the timing advance mechanism. Simply remove the distributor cap and gently rotate the rotor, it should snap back to its original place. If not, remove the distributor and clean and lubricate the advance weights and springs located underneath the breaker points plate.
